A Week In Weston - The Family Room

Man, what a week. So much to dish about this massive project and a huge thanks to all of you for following along and sharing your thoughts here, and on Instagram and Facebook.
So what do we have here today? Well the kitchen we revealed yesterday, now leads in to this family room. This is how it once looked:

Hmmm. Where to start? The green carpet with the green walls? Definitely a comfortable space for someone else, but as you know by now, Athalia and Sam are a bit more contemporary and need loads of color in their lives.

As you can see, we kept the same layout. We needed a large sectional that could seat the entire family comfortably and an entertainment center to house a large screen television and lots of books and family mementos.

This unit is from Ikea and is a steal of a price for its beauty and function (you can customize it in various ways to fit your space). That back-lit panel is quite the show-stopper. But I gotta tell you this thing was a beast to install and as is often the issue when you purchase a large item from Ikea, we were missing parts which meant quite a few trips back and forth. I cannot express here the choice words I often used on those trips.
Anywho, Shaggy and my brother Shomari (who flew in from Jamaica to help us in the homestretch) finally got this thing assembled in the wee hours one morning. As much as we love Ikea, I think we all avoided saying that name for weeks! It was that bad.

Athalia wanted a royal blue chair worked into the home somewhere and we fell in love with this armchair from West Elm.  It's quite a comfy additional place to sit.

When they are chillin on the sectional, Athalia and Sam both have a chaise to stretch out on, which a great feature for couples to consider so one person doesn't monopolize the chaise. hehe. Ohh that rug. I'd been eyeing that rug from CB2 for an eternity and was happy as punch when I was able to snag it on a sale (sadly I think they no longer carry it). Athalia had been secretly in love with it as well and was floored to see it on reveal day. That happened a lot with Athalia. We joked often about how much I'd gotten into her head to see what she really wanted.

I used their existing art to create a small gallery wall, topped with an antler's head they already owned.

When designing a space with children, a traditional coffee table won't often work. This timber table from Z-Gallerie doubles as a table, foot rest and a stage! The girls often get on top and perform their favorite songs. I was privy to such a performance and sang along fiercely as they danced atop to Beyonce's "Single Ladies". Definitely one of my favorite rooms in this home.
